The 10th round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship got underway on Sunday with the Spanish Grand Prix, held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
The race resulted in another win for Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, but McLaren’s Lando Norris put up a decent fight, like he has in previous rounds. The McLaren driver was second in Spain and at the previous Canadian Grand Prix, and made his first and only win at the Miami Grand Prix.
It means McLaren has overtaken Ferrari as the team now putting up the best fight against leaders Red Bull. Mercedes-Benz AMG has also shown some pace in recent rounds, though like Ferrari it remains a step behind Red Bull and McLaren.
Verstappen is still the favorite to take home the title this season, which will be his fourth, though his performance gap with rivals isn’t as big as it used to be, as witnessed in both Canada and Spain. In both races Norris was only seconds behind.
Fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez continues to deliver a mixed performance and as a result remains well off the pace of his teammate. Perez was only able to qualify eighth and was dropped to 11th on the grid because of a three-place grid penalty that carried over from the Canadian race.
Mercedes, like Perez, has struggled throughout much of the season, though recent upgrades looking to be turning the tide. Nevertheless, any change is too late to retain star driver Lewis Hamilton who switches to Ferrari next year.
There’s still plenty of time for teams to make changes and for drivers to further catch up with current leader Verstappen, as there are still 14 races to go in this season.
